TALES FROM JANUS CITY
-
Tales from Janus City is an ongoing multimedia, interactive cyber-noir set in Janus City, a sprawling Martian metropolis shaped by time-dilation drugs and a technology that lets people record and experience memories through LES/MRX files.
The story centers around Orion Solo, an ex-detective turned nighttime courier who discovers his dead coworker and gets pulled into an investigation that leads him to Archer, a powerful figure with his own reasons for digging into the case. As Orion and Archer work together, both pursue their own agendas while uncovering something much bigger than either expected.

The layout of Janus City was heavily inspired by Dubai. It is a fast-paced city, known for its rapid urbanization and high-energy atmosphere, and functions as a global hub, attracting a diverse population of immigrants, creating a dynamic social scene. This disorienting city therefore felt like the perfect model for the first human settlement on Mars. Districts in Janus City are sharply divided by architecture, function, and by the type of people that inhabit them. Like any metropolis, the city bears the scars of class. Each zone serves a purpose, but more than that, they reflect a different version of reality, from the sterilized opulence of the floating mansions to the rust-stained warrens hidden below.
Concordia Heights and Pomona Gardens:
Type: Luxury Residential Status: High-security dome Mood: Pristine, detached, eerily quiet Green domed suburbs for the wealthy with landscaped parks, elite villas, exclusive biotech lounges, etc. All gates are biometric, so this district isn’t easily accessible.
Downtown:
Type: Residential & Commercial/Transit Nexus Status: Central dome Mood: Fast-paced, gleaming, high surveillance Central business and tech hub under a towering dome featuring glittering spires, corporate HQs, data terminals, financial towers and transit hubs. Regular apartment buildings with standard amenities and efficient layouts.
The Bay:
Type: Mixed-use/HydroLeisure Status: Partial-dome Mood: Synthetic serenity, curated pleasure Artificial water reservoirs for hydroponics, leisure and high-end residences, lined with floating walkways, high rise apartments and recreational domes (simulated pleasure yachts, boat rides, etc.).
Oldtown:
Type: Historical/Cultural Quarter Status: Partial-dome Mood: Chaotic, warm, nostalgic Bustling old settlements and bazaars packed with traditional workshops, civil bustle and cultural relics. Contains red light zones.
Mars Industrial Zone (MIZ):
Type: Industrial/Creative Hybrid Status: Exo-filtered domes Mood: Loud, rough, electric Manufacturing zone; mining, robotics, assembly lines, art studios. Gritty and dynamic, contrasted by street art and underground culture.
Noctis Crevasse (The Labyrinth):
Type: Low-income/Underground economy Status: Underdome Mood: Dense, desperation Dense hive of low-income neighborhoods hidden in the massive canyon system on Mars, tech side-markets, dorms, black-market neuro-stim peddlers, illegal mod stations, etc. Contains red light zones.
Red Dunes Expanse (The Desert):
Type: Outskirts/Frontier Status: Dome-free Mood: Wild, free, untamed Martian desert outskirts with resource harvesters (wind farms, unauthorized mines, etc.) and research outposts, unprotected by domes. Open sky, wind farms, drift racing circuits and clandestine cults.

Neuro-stims are synthetic neurological enhancers designed to alter the brain’s perception of time, cognition, and stress, first developed back on Earth by NovaDyne Labs as a drug under the code name Project Lucid. Originally created for high-efficiency work cycles in zero-G environments and off-world colonies, they are now ubiquitous in Janus City — used, abused, and weaponized.
Primary Effects:
Time Dilation: Users perceive time as moving slower or faster, depending on the dosage. This creates a feeling of hyper-awareness or, alternatively, a dreamlike state where hours seem like seconds.
Euphoria
Cognitive Boost: Increased focus, rapid problem-solving, heightened memory recall, and sensory enhancement/awareness.
Creative Surge: Many users experience vivid imagery, deep inspiration, or heightened artistic creativity.
Side Effects:
Immediate Side Effects:
Physical Weakness: After the drug wears off, users experience muscle fatigue and lethargy.
Emotional Instability: Sudden mood swings and difficulty regulating emotions.
Hallucinations: Overdoses can result in persistent hallucinations, often terrifying and uncontrollable.
Long-term Side Effects:
Neural Degradation: Prolonged use damages neural pathways, leading to memory loss, impaired cognition, and reduced motor skills, primarily among unlicensed or extended users.
Dependency: Eclipse creates an intense craving, with users needing increasingly higher doses to achieve the same effects.
Time Perception Disorders: Chronic users lose their ability to perceive time accurately, sometimes experiencing "time loops" or blackouts.
Empathy Loss: Emotional numbness and detachment from reality, making users more prone to violent or unethical behavior.
EARLY DEVELOPMENT SKETCHES
CHARACTER ART
CURRENT PROGRESS:
I'm developing the project’s website and learning to build its interfaces and interactive elements using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. Rather than simply presenting the story as a linear narrative, I want readers to explore Janus City through the same kinds of digital spaces its characters inhabit.
Future plans include serialized comic installments, illustrations, animations, audio, interactive documents, and other pieces of media that expand the story and its world. I'm working towards bringing these elements together into a connected experience where readers can move between different formats, uncover details, and piece together the story at their own pace.
